    What is Laser Hair Removal?

Soprano® Laser Hair Removal is an effective and painless treatment for removal and reduction of unwanted hair. Laser hair removal works by using high intensity laser light to target and destroy the hair follicle.

Using IN-Motion® laser technology, unwanted hair can be removed from the target area with a series of quick and painless appointments.

Although permanent hair removal cannot be guaranteed, most patients experience significant reduction in hair growth after as few as 6 appointments.

The treatment is effective on light and dark skin and hair.

    Why choose Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal is a routine procedure which causes you minimal discomfort and disruption for optimum benefit. Treatments can be easily fitted into your lifestyle with treatments taking no more than 30 minutes.

Soprano® Pain Free Laser Hair Removal uses a small 810-nm diode laser which targets individual hairs with expert precision. Laser light is absorbed by melanin, the pigment in the hair follicle. This light energy then heats the pigment and effectively destroys the hair follicle without damaging the surrounding cells.

The IN-Motion® technology, a technique of repeatedly sweeping the hand piece over the area, not only reduces discomfort, but also ensures a quicker treatment time. The applicator is moved over the treatment area gradually heating the skin to the target therapeutic temperature. The energy is then delivered evenly ensuring a fuller coverage.

Laser hair removal is a routine procedure which does not hurt, and results in a significant reduction of hair after only 6-8 sessions removing the need for shaving, waxing or other hair removal methods. Maintenance treatments may be required. Patients who suffer from PCOS or hirsuitism may need on-going treatment.

Who should have Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal is suitable for adult men and women of all skin types and colour who want to reduce the appearance of unwanted hair.

What does the Laser Hair Removal involve?

During your initial consultation the experienced Aesthetician will review your medical history and assess your suitability for treatment. They will perform a test patch to ensure safety of treatment. A test patch is required even if you have had laser hair removal before at another clinic, or if you have had laser hair removal over 12 months ago. A treatment schedule will be decided upon depending on the area and type of hair that you want removed.

Following your consultation and test patch, you will be asked to shave prior to the treatment. Any tattoos need to be fully covered, and patients should not use fake tan for at least five days prior to treatment.

During the procedure, the Soprano® laser handpiece is placed onto the skin and moved rapidly across the treatment area. Laser energy is directed into the hair, penetrating the melanin, which in turn heats the rest of the hair shaft.

The heat weakens, and eventually destroys, the hair follicle using a process known as thermal destruction. As a result, the follicle detaches from the hair shaft without damaging the skin leading to long lasting hair reduction.

The hair cycle is therefore interrupted, and with subsequent treatments the hair becomes finer and then doesn’t grow back.

During the procedure patients may feel a slight warming sensation but the treatment should not cause discomfort.

If you are taking certain anti coagulant or medications or antibiotics laser hair removal is not advised, so you should consult you should mention this in your consultation.

Laser hair removal is not advised for pregnant women.

How long does the treatment take?

The length of the procedure depends on the areas being treated and can range from 30minutes through to one hour. It usually takes around two weeks for treated hairs to be shed, followed by a re-growth phase of four weeks. Further treatments are therefore usually set 4-6 weeks apart.

    What are the side effects?

The procedure itself should cause minimal discomfort, but some patients may experience some minor side effects after the procedure including itching, pink skin, redness, and swelling around the treatment area, or swelling of the follicles (follicular edema). These side effects rarely last more than two or three days. Antihistamines may help to combat this.

    What aftercare is involved?

The following advice can help to minimize discomfort in the days following the procedure

    • Applying Biafin to reduce inflammation.
    • Avoid sun exposure for at least two days and use sunscreen SPF30 or greater at all times during the course of treatment.
    • Avoid picking or scratching the treated skin and avoid any exfoliation prior to and post treatment for five days.
    • Do not use any other hair removal treatment method (waxing, electrolysis or tweezing) between treatments apart from shaving.
    • After the underarms are treated, use a powder-based or non-alcohol based deodorant for 24 hours after the treatment to reduce skin irritation.
    • Avoid hot baths and heat treatments and treat the skin gently, as if you had sunburn, for the first 24 hours.
Avoid exercise for 24 hours post treatment.

How long until I am fully healed/will see results?

Your skin may feel as if it is sunburned after the procedure, but this should lessen over 2-3 days.

Over the next month, your treated hair will fall out, and you should see optimum results within 6-8 treatments.

    How long do results last?

While “permanent” laser hair removal is never guaranteed, after six to eight treatments, you can expect a marked reduction in hair. Maintenance treatments may be required. Patients who suffer from PCOS or hirsuitism may need on-going treatment.
