    What is anti-wrinkle treatment?

Anti-wrinkle injections are a popular non-surgical treatment that reduces the look of fine lines and wrinkles for smoother looking skin.

Botulinum toxin s a prescription medicine that is injected into the skin to block nerve signals on a temporary basis. This limits the movement of muscles, which can improve the appearance of wrinkles, crow’s feet (lines around the corner of the eyes), forehead furrows, and fine lines.

At London Real Skin our Dermatologists use Botox Cosmetic brand for injecting as we’ve found that in our clinical setting the results last longer than other brands. Botox Cosmetic is one of the most extensively studied medical aesthetic treatments and is approved for cosmetic use in 78 countries and the safety and efficacy has been clinically proven.

What are the benefits of anti-wrinkle injections treatment?

The muscles on the face naturally contract and expand to form expressions, and while it’s a completely natural process, it is one that will cause frown lines and crow’s feet to develop over time.

As we age, collagen that is found naturally in the skin begins to deplete. This along with environmental factors such as free radicals and sun exposure causes lines and wrinkles to appear. Of course, facial expressions and movement will also result in the development of wrinkles and fine lines. Frowning and raising eyebrows for example can cause lines to develop in between the two brows, while squinting and laughing causes the muscles around the eyes to contract, resulting in crow’s feet.

Anti-wrinkle injections reduce the look of these lines by targeting the underlying cause, working to minimise muscle movement. The process yields temporary but noticeable results, with the treated area appearing noticeably smoother.

If you are looking for a little help to reduce the increasing lines and wrinkles on your face then anti-wrinkle injections can be a great solution to this. As it is not a permanent treatment, it is a good alternative to those who want to avoid surgical cosmetic procedures.

Our Dermatologists use small amounts of Botox in each injection to avoid a “frozen face” look yet still creating noticeable change for younger, smoother looking skin.

Your anti-wrinkle injections treatment will be carried out by one of our expert Dermatologists, Dr Martin Wade or Dr Anna Chapman. Anti-wrinkle injections are a technique-sensitive treatment, and when you entrust this treatment to our Dermatologists, you can be sure you are being treated by licensed, trained medical professionals who are experts in facial anatomy.

Our Dermatologists are highly knowledgeable, experienced and skilled in the application of anti-wrinkle injections, providing you with natural looking results that leave you feeling comfortable and confident.

Results are visible within 24 to 48 hours for treatment of moderate to severe frown lines. The treatment lasts for 3-4 months however with continual use some patients may find the results last for up to 6 months or even longer.

What is involved in anti-wrinkle treatment?

Anti-wrinkle injection treatment is a relatively quick and painless treatment that can be performed during the day with patients returning to work immediately afterwards.

Before any treatment, patients need to have a consultation with one of our Dermatologists, who will examine your face and discuss with you your skincare goals.

Our Dermatologists use Botox Cosmetic brand product which is stored in a medical fridge at the required temperature to keep it fresh and is mixed on the day to ensure the best results. Our Dermatologists use super-fine needles to reduce the discomfort of the procedure.

The treatment doesn’t hurt; some patients describe injections similar to being pinched. If you have a lower pain threshold, our Dermatologists can apply ice packs or pre-treat the area with a topical numbing anaesthetic. They will inject small amounts of Botox around the treatment area.

If this is the first time you have had anti-wrinkle injection treatment, the Dermatologist will ask you to return in two weeks’ time to review the results and perhaps top-up the treatment to provide the best results for you.

The procedure itself lasts around half an hour.

What are the risks or potential side-effects of anti-wrinkle injection treatment?

Anti-wrinkle injections are not suitable for the following people:

      • Known allergies to botulinum toxins
      • Suffering from myasthenia gravis, Eaton lambert syndrome, diabetes, angina, epilepsy, hepatitis, auto-immune disease or a neuromuscular condition
      • Patients with an infection on their face, including cold sores
      • Pregnant or breast feeding women
      • Patients who have had laser resurfacing or a skin peel in the previous 6 weeks

Side effects, if they occur, usually appear within the first few days following injection, and are usually temporary and mild to moderate in severity. As with any injection, pain, burning, stinging, swelling and/or bruising may occur. The most common side effects associated with Botulinum toxin injections are headaches, ptosis (drooping of the upper eyelid), redness, localized muscle weakness and face pain

Patients treated with Botulinum toxin injections may experience exaggerated muscle weakness. A severe allergic reaction may occur very rarely after injection with a Botulinum toxin.

Side effects possibly related to the spread of toxin distant from the site of administration have been reported very rarely with Botulinum toxin (e.g. exaggerated weakness in other muscles in your body not near to where the injection was given, difficulty in swallowing or pneumonia due to unwanted food or liquid in the airways, which can be fatal).

In clinical studies, three per cent of patients experienced eyelid drooping, while one per cent experienced eyelid swelling.
