Acne Scars: The Treatment Options

From our Holborn (Central London) based clinic, we provide a full range of Acne treatment options to reduce scarring and improve overall skin appearance. Book an appointment to see one of our Acne Dermatologists.

Acne can lead to scarring which can affect someone’s confidence just as much as the acne itself. Once the acne is under control, we can treat the remaining scarring.

Dermal filler improves the appearance of acne scars by lifting the depressed scars. A small quantity of Hyaluronic Acid which as a smooth gel consistency, will be injected under the scar to lift the area and make it less obvious. The results are immediate and can last between 12 to 18 months.

Laser Skin Resurfacing for Acne Scarring – At London Real Skin we also use an Erbium YAG laser to treat acne scarring. The laser works by producing energy in the mid infrared invisible light spectrum which can be used to precisely target skin and water-holding tissue (the scar), leaving the surrounding skin unharmed. This creates a controlled thermal injury or wound that leads to remodelling of collagen. As a result the skin appear smoother and the scars are less visible.

Micro-needling for Acne Scarring – At London Real Skin we also use The SkinPen microneedling device that causes controlled micro-injuries and stimulate the body’s natural wound healing process. The micro-injuries trigger the release of cytokines and growth factors that lead to remodelling of collagen and elastin, therefore making the skin look smoother. A course of 4 to 6 sessions is necessary to treat acne scarring and optimal results can be seen when combine with other treatments like dermal filler.

What are the benefits of acne scarring treatment?

After the acne scar removal the skin will appear smoother and the scars will be less obvious. During the following days after the treatment the skin will be more hydrated and the texture improved. The skin will begin to look clearer with less acne scarring.

What is involved in acne scar removal treatments?

During a consultation, one of our practitioner will examine your skin. They will determine if you are suitable for this procedure. If so, photos will be taken before the procedure.

The skin will be cleansed with an antiseptic solution and the practitioner will mark the areas to inject. A topical local anaesthetic cream will be applied to your skin. It will be left on for about 20 minutes.

After the local anaesthetic is removed the practitioner will start injecting. Most injections will be done within the subcutaneous tissues.

Photos will be taken after the procedure, and this allows the practitioner to compare the results.

What are the risks or potential side effects of acne scar treatment?

There may be some bleeding during the treatment. As a result, there may be some bruising and swelling in the injected area that can last for 24 to 48 hours. Your practitioner may recommend applying ice for 15 minutes afterwards on the injected area to minimise swelling and to make it more comfortable.

Does acne scar treatment hurt? is it painful?

No acne scar treatment does not hurt. Any dermal fillers used for injecting contain a local anaesthetic so while there may be a small pin-prick initially, the treatment is not uncomfortable. We use as topical anaesthetic which numbs the area during microneedling treatment. Laser treatment may make the skin feel hot like a bad sunburn, but we will advise on aftercare to help make this more comfortable.

How long do treatment results last?

Acne scar treatment provides permanent results. The texture and appearance of the skin is improved. Dermal filler may need to be reapplied after 12-18 months although over time the skin continues to heal itself. It is important to control the underlying acne to ensure that further scarring does not occur and so your treatment plan will include skincare to manage any ongoing acne

What are the best / most effective treatments for acne scar reduction? How long do treatment results last?

There is no one size fits all acne scar reduction treatment available. Each person is different and so will require a personalised approach to treating their acne scars. We have a number of evidence based treatment here at the clinic that are effective in reducing and minimising acne scarring and your treatment plan may involve microneedling, dermal filler injections, laser treatment, and the use of custom skincare.

What aftercare is required?

Aftercare will vary but usually you will be required to keep the skin moisturised. Your acne specialist will be able to guide you on the level of aftercare required.
