WHAT SKIN CONCERNS AND CONDITIONS CAN BE TREATED WITH ANTI-WRINKLE INJECTIONS?

Dermatology-Led Aesthetic Clinic in London

Frown lines are deep lines, which form between the eyebrows as a result of the two muscle groups regularly contracting and relaxing when frowning. Frown lines are often just two lines between the brows, however, if left untreated for long enough a more permanent third line can appear, which is known as the ‘11’s’ line.

Frown lines can appear in your early 20’s onwards, especially if your parents developed them at a young age. If you start to treat frown lines with anti-wrinkle injections as early as possible, ideally as soon as you start to see fine lines forming, you are more likely to prevent deeper lines forming and becoming more permanent.

You may find that twice-yearly treatment is enough to keep the lines from progressing and getting any deeper. Relaxing this muscle can also relieve tension in the area and may help to prevent and ease headaches.

Forehead lines can be present across the width of the forehead as you lift the brows. If you are particularly expressionate when speaking you may find that these lines become more prominent and permanent more quickly.

Forehead lines can be ageing, and may be especially noticeable if you wear makeup as it’s likely that the makeup will begin to sit into the lines the deeper they get.

Patients often think that forehead lines can be treated as one area, however, it is a tricky area to treat effectively without making it look too ‘overdone’. It’s likely your practitioner will suggest treatment for more than just the forehead lines in order to achieve a more natural result and to prevent over-treating the forehead in the long run. Over-treating can result in the forehead looking droopy and unflattering.

It’s important that you are treated by a knowledgeable practitioner for these reasons, long-term goals are always in the mind of our practitioners during your consultations. Forehead lines are to be treated with extra caution, so your two-week review appointment is important treatment in this area.

There’s more to injectables than just the first impressive result, and continuity of care is paramount, that’s why a lot of our patients are returning patients.

Bunny lines are small wrinkles across the bridge of the nose, which are often most visible when laughing.

Treated with anti-wrinkle injections, bunny lines can be easily smoothed with two small injections to prevent the lines forming deeper and becoming more permanent.

Crow’s feet are the lines around your eyes that you may find yourself being more drawn to in a lovely smiley photo – the one thing you don’t want to notice first in your favourite family photo.

Crow’s feet, like most fine lines and wrinkles can be ageing. Make-up tends to crease around the eye area accentuating the lines and making your eyes appear smaller, and more tired.

This area is straight-forward to treat, and can make a world of difference! Your practitioner will aim to achieve natural-looking results, reducing signs of ageing but without changing the way you look when you smile. You will look and feel fresher post-treatment.

The ‘lip flip’ – performed by injecting anti-wrinkle treatment just above the top lip to create the illusion of a fuller lip. A great treatment to achieve natural-looking, subtle results as it gives a sight visible ‘lift’ to the lip, making it appear fuller.

The ‘lip flip’ is also good for treating a ‘gummy’ smile as the muscle above the lip is relaxed, which helps to minimise elevation when smiling, meaning reduced gum exposure. The ‘lip flip’ is an ideal treatment for more mature patients and those who would prefer to avoid filler treatment.

The subtle but noticeable results of the lip flip treatment will take effect after around 7 days and can last for up to 3-months.

The mentalis muscle becomes more rigid around the chin as part of the natural ageing process. This can sometimes result in the chin appearing more pointed and prominent, which can cause the facial features to appear slightly unbalanced.

Anti-wrinkle injections can also treat a ‘dimpled’ chin. If you notice the chin looking dimpled when speaking or with some facial expressions, anti-wrinkle injections can help to relax the muscle and smooth the chin to prevent dimpling.

Another easily treatable area with the ability to achieve such a difference to the facial balance, helping you to achieve more youthful-looking skin.

Teeth grinding, jaw clenching and tension headaches believe it or not can all be related. All of these symptoms can be massively reduced and treated effectively with anti-wrinkle injections.

Teeth grinding and regular jaw clenching can result in over-working the masseter muscle, which can become significantly enlarged and make the jaw appear square and over-prominent. Sometimes this can make the jaw look unbalanced and larger on one side of the face. As well as the muscle becoming enlarged, regular clenching can also build tension and cause headaches.

There are several benefits to treating the masseter muscle with anti-wrinkle injectables, including a reduction in the jaw muscle, to reduce teeth grinding and jaw clenching and prevent tension headaches.

As part of the natural ageing process, the muscles around our mouth can become firmer and stiff causing the corners of the mouth to look down-turned and sad. This can also cause a build up of saliva to gather in the corners of the mouth and cause sore, cracked lips.

Two small, simple injections in the corners of the mouth can achieve a happier-looking relaxed face and prevent saliva build-up.

When considering anti-ageing treatments, people can often easily overlook the neck area, which is an area that can reveal tell-tale signs of ageing.

Platysmal bands are muscles which are long, narrow and string-like, which can protrude from either side of the base of the neck when being expressionate during speech. Anti-wrinkle treatment can soften these muscles as an extremely effective anti-ageing treatment revealing a rejuvenated, more youthful appearance.

Excessive sweating can become a debilitating condition. Luckily, when treated effectively by a knowledgeable Aesthetic Doctor, anti-wrinkle treatment can be truly life-changing. By reducing the over-activity of the sweat glands, this treatment will prevent excessive sweating and help you to relax and enjoy the spring and summer months without worrying!

You should only need this treatment annually, however in some severe cases of hyperhidrosis, you may need a second treatment within the year. The injections are inserted just under the skin and are virtually painless. The benefits of the treatment will start to become apparent in under a week and can last up to 9-12 months.

If you are someone who never knew that excessive sweating of the scalp, palms of the hands, soles of the feet and underarms can be treated with anti-wrinkle injections, we hope that we can help you to regain your life – to go about your day without worrying socialising for too long, becoming too nervous and sweating in a big work meeting, or dreading the summer rolling around.

Teeth grinding will not only cause dental issues, but can also be a cause of chronic headaches and migraines. Most people are unable to prevent teeth grinding without intervention as more often than not, it happens during sleep.

Luckily, anti-wrinkle injections can be very effective in preventing teeth grinding, which in turn can help to relieve tension build up and get rid of the tension headaches.

Depending on each individual and their lifestyle factors, this treatment can last up to 4-6 months.

Your anti-wrinkle injection Consultation

A complimentary consultation will be carried out prior to having the treatment done to check your suitability, and allow for your Aesthetic Doctor to better understand your skin concerns. This will allow them to provide a bespoke treatment plan for you. Post treatment, a complimentary aesthetic review is provided to monitor and assess your results after two weeks. During this appointment any required top-ups can also be administered.

What Causes the Tell-Tale Signs of Aging?

As we age, collagen that is found naturally in the skin begins to deplete. This along with environmental factors such as free radicals and sun exposure causes the skin to lose elasticity and this results in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Genetics, diet and lifestyle factors (alcohol, stress, smoking) can also impact the speed in which this process occurs.

The muscles in the face naturally contract and expand to form expressions, and while it’s a completely natural process, it is one that will cause frown lines and crow’s feet to develop over time. For instance, continuous frowning and raising of the eyebrows can cause lines to develop in between the two brows, whilst squinting and laughing causes the muscles around the eyes to contract, resulting in what you may know to be called crow’s feet.

The Solution – Anti-Wrinkle Injections

Anti-wrinkle injections are a prescription-only medicine (POM), which is injected into the skin to block nerve signals and reduce muscle movement on a temporary basis. This relaxes the muscles, which can reduce and soften wrinkles and fine lines. This treatment is one of the most extensively studied medical aesthetic treatments and is approved for cosmetic use in 78 countries as the safety and efficacy has been clinically proven.

Anti-Wrinkle Injections FAQ

Only the very best. At London Real Skin our Aesthetic Nurses and Doctors use the highest-quality prescription-only medicine (POM), which can only be purchased by licensed professionals. The medication is injected into the skin to temporarily relax the muscle. This limits the movement of muscles, which can reduce the appearance and soften wrinkles and fine lines.

During the initial in-depth consultation, your Aesthetic Doctor will discuss your concerns and determine what it is you’d like to achieve through the use of anti-wrinkle injectables. Your Doctor will also review your medical history and answer any questions you may have, ensuring that you feel safe and comfortable to have the treatment and to provide you with a bespoke treatment plan to meet your skin goals and needs. Photographs will also be taken to track and monitor your progress and results.

Everyone has a different pain threshold, however only a very small amount of our patients report feeling slight discomfort during treatment, but for most it is relatively quick and painless treatment throughout and afterwards.

The following aftercare is recommended to improve the treatment results and to minimise side-effects from the treatment:

  • Avoid alcohol consumption for up to 12 hours
  • Avoid extreme sun exposure, UV light, freezing temperatures and saunas for 2 weeks after treatment
  • Avoid additional treatments in the treated area for the 7 days following treatment
  • Avoid massaging the area manually or with any massaging tools
You will be able to go back to your usual daily activities straight after treatment, but your Aesthetic Practitioner may ask you to take the day off from exercise or other strenuous activity. Alcohol consumption should be avoided before and on the day of the treatment. Breathable, mineral make-up can be applied after 2 hours, however we advise avoiding this for up to 12 hours if possible to allow the skin to breathe. This is all to allow the injection site to close and avoid infection. Ice may be applied to the injected area to reduce any swelling or discomfort.

It is important to add that while the risks associated with anti-wrinkle injectables are minimal, you need to fully disclose your medical history prior to treatment, as certain allergies, skin and neurological conditions or medications can jeopardise your safety or results.

Anti-wrinkle injections, if administered correctly, is a very safe procedure. There is however a very small risk of associated complications, as with any medical treatment. Common side effects of injectables include swelling, slight discomfort, bruising, lumpiness, or unevenness.

We’re on hand post-treatment should you experience any side-effects. More often than not, any side-effects will subside by themselves within 24-48 hours, however, if this is not the case then we are here to reassure you and we will invite you to the clinic for a review of your treatment. If, on the very rare occasion, we believe you are experiencing an adverse reaction, we may ask you to seek further medical attention.

Anti-wrinkle injections are not suitable for the following people:

  • Patients on medications that reduce or inhibit hepatic metabolism (cimetidine, beta-blockers), steroids, aspirin or anticoagulant
  • Pregnant or breast feeding patients
  • Patients suffering from auto-immune disease or disease affecting the immune system, acute rheumatic fever or recurrent sore throat, history of herpes simplex (cold sores) or other skin infections, untreated epilepsy, hypertrophic scarring, porphyria or cardiac conduction disorders?
  • Patients who have had laser resurfacing treatment or a chemical skin peel in the last 6 weeks

If you are interested in having anti-wrinkle injections, but believe you may be contraindicated, contact the clinic and we can clarify this for you.
