Vanessa Charest always knew that she wanted to make a career out of transforming peoples’ lives by changing the way they look and feel. After leaving Montreal, Canada, she found herself in Central London and quickly settled into a role as an Aesthetic Nurse here at London Real Skin, a leading laser and cosmetic dermatology clinic that specialises in evidence-based treatments. Vanessa felt at home here, given her background in general nursing and the clinic’s location within a medical dermatology centre in CQC registered facilities.
I sat down with Vanessa to learn a bit more about her and her work.
Q. Why did you move from Montreal, Canada to London?
A. It started out as just a holiday! But I fell in love with the city. There are so many things happening. I moved here in January 2016 and now, a bit more than two years later, I have a job I love, I’ve gotten married and had a baby!
Q. What led you to become an aesthetic nurse?
A. I’ve always wanted to work in aesthetics, I knew that from the start. I used to love watching those TV programmes that showed dramatic makeovers of people. I love that I have the ability to improve someone’s appearance and from that, make them look and feel better. It’s an incredible thing to be able to change someone’s self-confidence, even slightly. I get to make people feel comfortable in their own skin which is the most satisfying part.
Of course, in order to get where I am now I had to study general nursing. But as soon as I could, I found a job in aesthetics.
Q. Do you have a ‘typical’ patient?
A. Not really! I see men and women of all ages. Just recently, I saw an 80-year-old woman. No matter what age you are, you still want to look good! I’d say that the only real generalisation that I can make is that all of our patients tend to be well informed. They have done their research. Our patients don’t tend to be interested in new trends or celebrity-inspired fads. Instead, they’re looking for real treatments that are backed by evidence and that actually work. I’ve noticed that – especially men – feel comfortable having treatments here because it’s a dermatology clinic, not a beauty salon.
Q. What’s the biggest misconception about your job
A. A lot of people think that Botox or Dermal Fillers will make you look unnatural and worry that everyone will be able to spot right away that you’ve had something done.
But, that’s just not the way it is. It can look natural. You can look better and be happier with your appearance without people ever knowing that you’ve done something. That’s the beauty of what I do! If it’s done right, you’ll never look overdone. I often tell my patients they will still look like themselves, but refreshed.
Q. How would you describe yourself?
A. Bubbly, positive, and passionate. For me it’s not hard to come to work because it’s something I am passionate about. My husband says I should have been a comedian because I make people laugh so easily but I don’t know about that.
Q. What are the values of the clinic?
A. All the doctors here are passionate about dermatology and aesthetics and it shows. The foundation of the clinic is based on a belief in evidence, clinical studies and data. I share that belief and so does everyone here. We don’t offer treatments unless they have proven results. That’s why we’re confident in our treatments, because it works.
We are also very patient focused. Everyone here, from our aesthetic clinicians to our Dermatologists, clinical staff and even administration staff, understand that our patients need to be at the centre of everything we do. That builds trust which is also very important here. We find that patients and specialists refer and recommend us because they have come to trust what we do. That’s a result of our transparency, prices and discretion.
Vanessa’s passion is palpable. She’s constantly learning and evolving as an Aesthetic Nurse and always strives to give all of her patients the most effective treatments possible.
